She’s the brainchild behind the Huffington Post, a successful businesswoman and mother who seems to juggle everything with ease. But success did not come easily for Arianna Huffington until she quit one bad habit in her life.
In an interview with
CNBC Make It at a Fuel List event hosted by her wellness site
Thrive Global, Arianna revealed she really became successful after she stopped working around the clock and depriving herself of a good night’s sleep.
“I have to assure you that the success at the Huffington Post happened after I started taking care of myself,” Arianna shared. “I can tell you with authority that when I’m exhausted, when I’m running on empty, I’m the worst version of myself. I’m more reactive. I’m less empathetic. I’m less creative. And all of us can testify to that.”
Arianna told the audience her change in lifestyle occurred when the Huffington Post was only two-years-old. Arianna was busy making phone calls and checking emails only to collapse and awaken in a pool of blood.
“I’m not saying that you can’t succeed by burning out,” Arianna said. “But you can succeed much more effectively, and much more sustainably, and with much less damage to your health and your relationships. That’s why they tell you on airplanes, put your own oxygen mask on first.”
