With the coronavirus pandemic still impacting our daily lives, it means celebrating July 4th this year may look a little different with many towns and cities canceling Independence Day firework displays.
But it doesn’t mean we still can’t celebrate. So don your favorite red, white and blue attire and gear up for a fun July 4th party social distance style!
Throw a Potluck BBQ
Throw a backyard cook-out for family and close friends and ask everyone to bring their favorite picnic dish. Try turning your basic BBQ up a notch by creating a theme, setting up a bunch of backyard games, unrolling a slip and slide for the kids, and setting up a slew of mosquito-fighting tiki torches throughout your garden.
Glamp in Style
Planning on serving a few signature cocktails for the adults to enjoy? Why not turn the party into an overnight sleepover by setting up tents in the garden – or bring the campout indoors by creating forts and laying down sleeping bags inside the home.
Buy a Bunch of Sparklers
Legal in most states, Sparklers are a great addition to July 4th festivities, especially when many of us will be foregoing traditional fireworks displays this year. Just be sure to provide adult supervision as sparklers can get very hot and possibly cause burns.
Stock Up on Patriotic Wear
Stores such as Old Navy, Target, and Walmart always have great deals on patriotic Independence Day clothing – so stock up on your red, white and blue and showcase that ‘Proud to be an American’ spirit.
Watch a Movie Under the Stars

Once the sun goes down it’s the perfect time to watch a movie under the stars. All you need to set up a backyard movie theater is a projector and an outdoor screen – popcorn and s’ mores are also a welcome addition too!
Have a Bonfire Sing-a-Long
Whether you’re singing Disney hits with the kids, or belting out your favorite American singers, having a campfire sing-a-long is a great family fun activity. Seize the opportunity to roast marshmallows, or hotdogs over the fire.
Watch a Firework Show on Television or Online This July 4th will certainly be a different experience for many of us, but it doesn’t mean you still can’t enjoy a fireworks display even if the event in your hometown has been canceled. Macy’s will televise their NYC fireworks displays on NBC and A Capitol Fourth will be showcased on PBS.
