When it comes to answering questions the way you answer may either make you appear trustworthy or the exact opposite, a new study finds.
According to Best Life, a study from the American Psychological Association conducted a series of experiments with more than 7,500 individuals from the US, UK, and France. Each participant either watched, listened, or read about a person responding to a question, with scenarios ranging from an immediate answer to a 10-second pause before answering.
The study, published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology found that participants rated those who paused first before answering questions as less trustworthy, Best Life reports.
“When you take pause before answering a question, it can appear that you are trying to manipulate your words or craft a certain message. At the worst, when you take a bit to answer, it could appear you are trying to think of a good lie,” Susan Trombetti, a relationship expert and CEO of Exclusive Matchmaking, told Best Life. “When someone replies immediately without hesitation, it seems like they do not have time to think of a lie and have their honest answer right away.”
