Denzel Washington to Receive AFI Life Achievement Award

Actor Denzel Washington has been selected to receive the American Film Institute’s Life Achievement Award.

Washington will be the 47th person to receive the prestigious award, according to Variety and will be honored during a tribute on June 6th in Los Angeles.
According to Variety, Denzel Washington first broke into Hollywood on the NBC TV series St. Elsewhere and has received Academy Awards for his roles in Glory and Training Day. He also received nominations for Malcolm X, The Hurricane, Cry Freedom, Flight, Fences and Roman J. Israel, Esq.
“Denzel Washington is an American hero,” Howard Stringer, chair of the AFI Board of Trustees said in a statement. “As an actor, he stands tall as a heroic, stoic embodiment of the best in all of us, and he does so with heart, humanity, and one of the brightest smiles to ever light up the screen. Equally formidable as a director and producer, he is a creative force to be reckoned with – and one of the most vital, relevant artists working today. AFI is proud to present him with its 47th Life Achievement Award.”
