The FDA is investigating a Hepatitis A outbreak linked to organic strawberries sold at Trader Joe’s, Walmart, Aldi, Kroger, and other major retailers.
According to Business Insider, the US has seen 17 Hepatitis A cases and 12 hospitalizations linked to the strawberries. The affected FreshKampo and HEB branded strawberries were purchased between March 5, 2022, and April 25, 2022 – and the FDA is warning people who bought the strawberries during that period and then froze them to dispose of them immediately.
“If you are unsure of what brand you purchased, when you purchased your strawberries, or where you purchased them from prior to freezing them, the strawberries should be thrown away,” the FDA said in a statement reported by Business Insider.
According to Business Insider, Hepatitis A can cause mild illnesses that last weeks and more severe illnesses that last months. In rare cases, Hepatitis A infection can cause liver disease and death.
