McDonald’s has confirmed they have created a plant-based burger, revealing their meatless option will be tested in some markets around the world next year.
After months of rumors surrounding what has been dubbed the McPlant, McDonald’s shared with USA Today the creation of the McPlant is part of their “Accelerating the Arches” growth strategy.
“McPlant is crafted exclusively for McDonald’s, by McDonald’s,” Ian Borden, McDonald’s international president, said at the investor meeting in a quote reported by USA Today. “In the future, McPlant could extend across a line of plant-based products including burgers, chicken substitutes and breakfast sandwiches.”
Along with the creation of the new plant-based burger, the iconic fast-food chain will also be releasing another new sandwich set to hit U.S locations early next year.
According to Fox News, the Crispy Chicken sandwich underwent testing at McDonald’s locations in Texas and Tennessee and featured a fried chicken filet served on a potato roll and topped with butter and pickles.
“McDonald’s has significant opportunity to expand its chicken offerings, a category that is growing faster than beef. This includes leveraging the extraordinary global strength of Chicken McNuggets and the McChicken sandwich, and investing in new line extensions and flavors,” the chain said in a statement. “It also means continuing to offer food that aligns with current consumer trends and taste profiles, like spicy.”
