A Mega Millions jackpot winner failed to claim their $36 million prize before the deadline passed on Sunday, lottery officials said.
The winning Quick Pick ticket was sold at a Publix supermarket in Jacksonville, Fla., and the drawing took place on Aug. 15, 2023, with white balls 18, 39, 42, 57, 63 drawn alongside a 7 for the Mega Ball.
Florida Lottery officials put out multiple calls for the lucky winner to come forward before the deadline, with the most recent announcement on Feb 8. Winners have 180 days to claim their prize, and the deadline ran out at midnight on Feb. 11.
As for what will happen to the unclaimed prize money, most of it will go to the state’s Educational Enhancement Trust Fund.
“Florida law requires that 80 percent of unclaimed prize funds from expired tickets be transferred directly to the Educational Enhancement Trust Fund,” the Florida Lottery told FOX Business. “The remaining 20 percent is returned to the prize pool from which future prizes are awarded or used for special prize promotions.”
The fund allocates money to public schools, universities and education scholarships.
The current Mega Millions jackpot stands at an estimated $457 million, with the next drawing at 11 p.m. Friday, Feb. 16. The odds of winning the jackpot are 1 in 302, 575, 350.
