Buckingham Palace is reportedly in shock following an announcement from Prince Harry and Meghan Markle revealing they are “stepping back” from their senior royal roles and plan to spend more time in North America.
The Duke and Duchess just returned to London from a six-week hiatus where they enjoyed some one-on-one time with baby Archie in Canada. Upon their return they announced the news on their official Instagram page.
“We intend to step back as ‘senior’ members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen,” the Duke and Duchess announced.View this post on InstagramA post shared by The Duke and Duchess of Sussex (@sussexroyal) on
“We now plan to balance our time between the United Kingdom and North America, continuing to honor our duty to The Queen, the Commonwealth, and our patronages,” Harry and Meghan shared.
“This geographic balance will enable us to raise our son with an appreciation for the royal tradition into which he was born, while also providing our family with the space to focus on the next chapter, including the launch of our new charitable entity,” the couple said in their announcement.
“We look forward to sharing the full details of this exciting next step in due course, as we continue to collaborate with Her Majesty The Queen, the Prince of Wales, the Duke of Cambridge and all relevant parties. Until then, please accept our deepest thanks for your continued support.”
According to several media outlets, the announcement came as a shock to Buckingham Palace.
Following Harry and Meghan’s announcement, the palace issued a statement, hinting at possibly complicated times ahead, saying, “Discussions with The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are at an early stage. We understand their desire to take a different approach, but these are complicated issues that will take time to work through.”A statement from Buckingham Palace regarding The Duke and Duchess of Sussex. https://t.co/1qtTEHiIq6
