The American Cancer Society has issued new cancer prevention guidelines which focus heavily on exercise and diet.
The guidelines are based on the most recent scientific evidence available and, according to Insider, take a hard line against processed meat and alcohol consumption. One of the main changes the guidelines make is the amount of exercise required each week. The new guidelines recommend 300 minutes of moderately intense physical activity per week, compared to the previous guidelines, which recommended 150 minutes per week. Vigorous exercise means any activity that causes us to sweat and get our heart rates up. The American Cancer Society also recommends two days per week of strength training.
According to Insider, the dietary recommendations emphasize eliminating red and processed meat, limiting sugary beverages and processed foods, and avoiding alcohol completely. The guidelines stress the importance of healthy nutrition with a focus on fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.
Additionally, the new guidelines include avoiding too much sedentary activities such as watching tv, or sitting down for long periods at a time.
