A teenager from Tampa, Florida is crediting her Apple Watch with helping to save her life after the watch told her to “seek immediate medical attention.”
Eighteen-year-old Deanna Recktenwald was sitting in church when her Apple Watch issued a warning to say her resting heart rate had hit 190 beats per minute.
Fortunately, for Deanna she was seated next to her mother, a registered nurse, who checked her daughter’s heartbeat to find the device was correct.
Deanna was rushed to Tampa Bay General Hospital, after first visiting a walk-in clinic, where the family found out Deanna suffers from chronic kidney disease with both kidneys operating at only 20%.
“It was alarming that the watch was telling us to seek medical attention,” Deanna’s mom Stacey told
WFTS. “I didn’t even know that it had the capability of giving us that alert.”
“Thank God for her having that watch,” Deanna’s relieved father Tom Recktenwald said.
The Recktenwald family wrote to Apple CEO Tim Cook to thank him for creating the device, writing, “If it wasn’t for her Apple watch alarming her about her HR we wouldn’t have discovered her kidney issue. I honestly feel your Apple Watch saved my daughter’s life. I am forever grateful to Apple for developing such an amazing, lifesaving product.”
