A mother has woken up from spending the past 27 years in a coma after hearing her son arguing in the hospital room.
According to the Daily Mail, Munira Abdulla was only 32-years-old when the car she was riding in was hit by a bus in 1991. As the bus hit the car Abdulla threw her body over her then four-year-old son to protect him from the impact causing her to suffer a severe brain injury. Her son escaped the crash with just a bruise.
Since then Abdulla has been in a vegetative state with a ventilator and feeding tube keeping her alive.
In April 2017 the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi heard of Abdulla’s case and gave her family a grant for treatment. Abdulla was flown to Germany where she underwent surgeries and last year began to make noises after hearing her now-grown son arguing in the hospital room, uttering her son’s name just days later.
‘It was her! She was calling my name, I was flying with joy; for years I have dreamt of this moment, and my name was the first word she said,’ her son Omar told The National.
Abdulla is now able to hold conversations with family and friends. However, she will still need regular physiotherapy to treat issues with her muscles.
