With pride month just around the corner, Marvel Comics is unveiling its first gay Captain America.
The upcoming issue titled The United States of Captain America goes on sale on June 2 and will introduce the Marvel Universe’s first gay Captain America, Aaron Fischer.
Fischer, who is openly gay, goes by the name “The Captain America of the Railways” – and, according to Entertainment Weekly, protects the runways and homeless youth by his own strength. “Aaron is inspired by the heroes of the queer community: activists, leaders and everyday folks pushing for a better life. He stands for the oppressed, and the forgotten. I hope his debut story resonates with readers and helps inspire the next generation of heroes,” the character’s writer and creator, Joshua Trujillo, said in a statement reported by Entertainment Weekly.
According to Entertainment Weekly, writer Christopher Cantwell revealed the new United States of Captain America sets out to “explore what the idea of Captain America means at this precise moment — not just on the grand stage of the world — but to every day and often overlooked communities throughout the United States.”
