The US Surgeon General has one request for the public amid coronavirus concerns, “stop buying face masks.”
US Surgeon General Dr Jerome Adams took to Twitter on Saturday urging people to stop stocking up on face masks, the effects of which are causing a face mask shortage nationwide. “Seriously people – STOP BUYING MASKS!” Dr. Adams tweeted. “They are not effective in preventing general public from catching #Coronavirus, but if healthcare providers can’t get them to care for sick patients, it puts them and our communities at risk!”
Adams said the best way to prevent the spreading of COVID-19 is to wash your hands, stay home when sick and other “everyday preventive actions.” He also urged people to get the flu shot since fewer flu patients means more resources to fight the COVID-19. According to CNN, the CDC recommends the following measures to prevent the spread of any respiratory disease such as COVID19:
Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.
Stay home from school or work when you are sick.
Cover your cough, or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe.
Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom, before eating, and after blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing.
If soap and water are unavailable, use an alcohol based sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol, but always wash hands with soap and water if hands are visibly dirty.
