Sadly, we will have no new emoji for 2021 – and just like everything else we have the coronavirus to blame!
According to CNN, the planned annual release will instead be pushed back to 2022, according to the Unicode Consortium, a non-profit that oversees emoji standards and is responsible for new releases.
Unfortunately, the coronavirus pandemic has delayed the new version of the Unicode Standard by six months, resulting in developers not having enough time to create new emoji for the 2021 release.
“Under the current circumstances we’ve heard that our contributors have a lot on their plates at the moment and decided it was in the best interests of our volunteers and the organizations that depend on the standard to push out our release date,” a representative from Unicode Consortium said in a statement.
Fortunately, it’s not all doom and gloom. We can look forward to the previously announced 2020 emoji to be released in September. These will include a cockroach, gender-neutral Santa Claus, a transgender symbol and flag, and an emoji of people hugging.
